Day 29 – Dutch Headwind

Today was a rough day. We woke up and Viki decided she wanted to fly home to Canada. We didn’t do that, but pressed slowly on towards Dunkirk, teary-eyed.

We had a fierce headwind the whole day (50km/h from the south and we were heading southwest). Viki also got two flats. We were expecting to catch the 9:48am short hourly ferry between islands, but didn’t make it until 11:48am. For much of the day we were going 10km/h, feeling like we were going nowhere. It rained much of the day and stayed around 10 degrees. We were pretty cold.

It wasn’t until 4pm that we stopped for lunch in Brugge, having only ridden 60km. The town was really pretty, with cute houses, canals, state buildings, and narrow streets.

The final few hours brought us through expanses of farmland, where the wind continued to howl. Luckily, right when we were wanting to stop, at 7pm, we happened upon a rest area with a perfect gazebo for us to camp under.
