A rest day – at last! Today was glorious. We had a great night’s sleep and didn’t do much today.
We spiced up our normal breakfast routine by adding banana and yogurt and ate on a bench downtown. Our hotel is in a fantastic location – right in the center of Brussels.
We did a tour of Brussels most famous monuments – Manneken Pis, Jeanneke Pis, Het Zinneke. These are a peeing boy (the original, and most famous), a peeing girl, and a peeing dog. Lunch was in Grand Place, which was pretty incredible, a plaza surrounded by gilded buildings that were very intricately carved. I tried a “kriek” style Belgian beer (a whole genre that covers sours typically with fruit) and we had our typical baguette with (rather stinky) Camembert, goat cheese, tomato, and copa di Parma ham.
We had a waffle or two with Nutella throughout the day (I may have consumed nearly a whole jar) and again went for moules frites for dinner. This time we tried variants on the standard “provencial” style – I had garlic and Viki had white wine. They were similar, but good anyways.
We’re here way ahead of schedule so will next be going towards Amsterdam before our return to London. The forecast looks wet, but at least we’ll start out dry, well-fed, and rested.
